Summary
The objective of this paper is to present observations and conclusions based on the autopsy records of deaths caused by fire, collected at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Poznan, in the years 2000-2009. Additionally, it reviews records of fire casualties collected at Poznan Fire Department in the same time period. The criteria under evaluation included: cause of death, circumstances, age and gender.

In the years 2000-2009 the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Medical University in Poznan conducted 62 autopsies of fire casualties. In the same time period, Poznan Fire Department registered 45 casualties. The analysis of the data collected and cross-referenced between the two sources concludes that the majority of fires (66.13%) broke out in residential buildings. Both sources also presented the same age and gender distribution. 72.58% of casualties were found to be males and 27.42% were females. The majority was aged between 41 – 55 and 56 – 70. The minority was juvenile. The main causes of death were found to be burns (32 cases) and carbon oxide poisoning (34 cases). Levels of carboxyhemoglobin amongst the poisoned were between 15 – 85%. 62.1% of casualties were under the influence of alcohol, with the highest recorded value of 4.63‰.
